Gusto Organics Veggie Burger

20130304-230805.jpg

Nestled right across the street from Urban Outfitters on 14th st and 6th ave, Gusto Organics is a great place to stop in and grab a healthy lunch or dinner. What makes Gusto so incredible is that they are not only vegan/ vegetarian friendly but meat eater friendly as well! It’s hard enough finding a good, organic restaurant with vegan and vegetarian food but finding one that can also appease your meat loving friends is an all around win. Everything on the menu is very health conscious and obviously organic, I ordered the lentil, eggplant veggie burger and my girl friend ordered their lentil stew with a side of quinoa. Everything was fabulous. Personally, the veggie burger bun was a little much for me and I could of just eaten the veggie burger topped with guacamole solo but good faux burger nonetheless! I love the lentil eggplant combination, filled with tons of protein. My friends lentil stew also looked amazing, can you tell I’m a lentil lover?! Regardless what your healthy pleasure is, I’m sure you can find something to appease your palette at Gusto Organics. Give it a try and let me know what you get!

Skinny Spot: Sacred Chow

20130304-230918.jpg
There’s not much I love more than a nice New York brunch, except maybe a nice NY vegan brunch! I can not believe I’ve lived in New York for almost four years and hadn’t stumbled upon this adorable vegan spot earlier! Located right by Washington Square Park “Sacred Chow” is your typical adorable hole in the wall little vegan joint. I had a lovely little brunch date with my girlfriend there and we both loved our food and giant mimosas, hehe. She got the Sardinian omelet and I indulged in their belgian waffles with coconut whipped cream and fresh fruit! Yummy! We both agreed we’ll definitely have to go back and try out their dinner menu. I’d highly recommend brunch here if your just going vegan and want to treat yourself. It’s a cute place with delicious food in one of my favorite nyc neighborhoods!

Visit their website to view their whole menu!

Skinny Spot: The Cosmopolitan Cafe

20120910-145746.jpg

Just the other day I had a lunch break while I was filming a movie down in TriBeCa and I stumbled upon this adorable little Cosmopolitan Cafe. It was the perfect quiet spot to enjoy a low key relaxing lunch. I was feeling a bit naughty and decided to indulge in some banana pancakes and scrambled eggs but their menu had some wonderful healthy options. Everything you could ask for with a bit of a home cooked spin. I’d highly recommend checking it out if your in the area for brunch with a friend or just a nice rejuvenating lunch alone! With my warm cup of green tea and my Diane Keaton autobiography that I’m reading – I couldn’t have asked for a more heavenly lunch hour!

The Cinnamon Snail

20120716-224903.jpg

I had the luck of running into the “Cinnamon Snail” truck downtown while running to an audition the other day. So naturally I promised myself a treat after I delivered a stellar performance! I had heard of The Cinnamon Snail through the vegan grapevine and started following them on twitter (@veganlunchtruck) to be up to date on their locales, however this rendezvous was just serendipitous. These lovely people had quite a gamut of delicious treats for me to choose from but after wavering back and forth I made the executive decision to go with there signature treat – the cinnamon snail ( aka a vegan cinnamon roll) and some deliciously yummy coconut milk iced coffee. It was fantastic! You could not even tell it was vegan, taste and texture the same as a yummy cinnamon roll anywhere. My only nitpicky complaint would be that I would have loved it warmed up a little bit, but that could just be a personal preference of mine. The iced coffee was out of this world and I definitely want to catch up with them soon to sample more goodies! Oh and also worth noting that they had some incredible looking gluten free treats on the truck as well. So follow @veganlunchtruck on twitter and stop by and indulge in some vegan goodies when their in your hood! Then, let me know what other amazing things you recommend from them and I’ll be sure to test them out when we meet again!

THE DINER: THIS IS A STORY OF A VEGGIE BURGER

Let’s just get this out of the way, I grew up in Jersey (yes, shut up and no, I don’t recall anything like Snooki at my high school). Moving on, so as a Jersey girl I pretty much grew up around diners. Diners were your multipurpose please everyone eatery. We went to them after church for breakfast, we went to them after our theatre performances and we hung out at them till the wee hours of the morning when we were in high school ordering cheese fries and driving the poor waitresses to drink. There was a kind of family to the diner, it was always there, always open and had almost anything you could want to eat. So naturally when I passed this gem down in the meatpacking district on 14th and 8th avenue I absolutely had to try it for myself!

While “The Diner” is more of a trendy new york eatery then what we have in the garden state, it keeps true to the diner classics. It has a wide spread menu of almost anything your heart could desire plus a few healthier, trendier bites and most importantly disco fries. They also have a kick-ass Mom’s grilled cheese special which is a thick, cheesy grilled cheese paired with some creamy tomato soup and small side salad. That’s a must try. They have a pretty solid selection of milkshakes (another diner staple) and they even serve MUD coffee! This is a very handy thing to know because if your down in the area you can stop in for a quick latte to-go.

This time I decided to roll the dice with their homemade veggie burger topped with guacamole and sprouts on an english muffin. I’m somewhat of a professional veggie burger critic now since any vegetarian will tell you that finding a really good one, is no small feat. Safe to say, I have traveled far and wide (around the tristate area) to find a yummy burger made from vegetables!

So when I tell you this burger pretty much rocked my socks off, you know you need to try it. Now, I’ll get through the honest somewhat disappointing stuff first because the over all experience was fabulous. I personally didn’t care for the english muffin, it wasn’t toasted, it was just kind of blah and I ate my burger with out it. No harm done. The burger it self was pretty amazing, I couldn’t tell exactly what was in it but it seemed like a large amount of vegetables and then some barley and beans (but don’t quote me on it). Topping it off with guacamole is just genius and something I am copying at every BBQ I serve veggie burgers at. The guac compliments the burger in a way that ketchup and mustard just can’t. As far as the sprouts, well to be honest, I didn’t really eat most of them. They don’t really do much for me but by all means be healthier than I and chop em down! Of course, I was a bit naughty and got a side of sweet potato fries instead of a side salad. C’mon, I’m at a diner, how could I not sample the fries?! They passed my test with flying colors and were all too quickly devoured.

To wrap it up, the servers were lovely and attentive, the veggie burger was a hit and I will be hitting up “The Diner” plenty more. They have a great selection of healthy choices too, if the veggie burger isn’t your thing. Google it, stop in and let me know what you think!

SUSHI: a skinny staple

After spending most of my day elbow deep in cake batter for this weekend’s red velvet cake pop centers, I needed a break and something that wasn’t going to destroy my bikini body progress. Sushi to the rescue! While, I personally went through a phase couple years ago where I ate sushi everyday till I couldn’t stand it anymore, it’s ridiculously hot summer days like today that make yearn for the skinny treat. Sushi, if you avoid any of the fried (aka tempura) and mayonnaise filled ones, is wonderful healthy meal option. Whenever I’m watching what I eat it’s always one of my go-to  suggestions when someone wants to go out to dinner or order take out and I don’t want to ruin my diet. The trick is to find a really good sushi spot or two and close by! Which is exactly what my game plan was for today and since, I’m never not working I decided to write you guys a little review of the local sushi spot in my hood! Enjoy!

OSAKA Japanese Cuisine (osakaqueens.com)

Located amongst the many sushi restaurants that crowd Broadway in Astoria, Osaka is a clean, quiet restaurant that is perfect for dinner with a friend or a relaxing late lunch by yourself. The servers are polite but not overbearing, as I tend to find often is the case in Japanese restaurants. I ordered an Avocado/Mango roll and a Ginza roll (minus the mayonnaise). The Ginza roll consists of cooked salmon, onion, mango and shrimp. I got both rolls with brown instead of white rice (which is nice that they offer). While it appeared they left out the mango along with the mayonnaise (that I didn’t want) on my Ginza roll, the meal was otherwise very good. Everything tasted fresh and I was very satisfied with my lunch. I will definitely order from this place again and if your in Astoria and need some reputable sushi – head on in!

One Lucky Duck!

My lovely friend Jen picked this little vegan spot for our lunch date and I just haaaaaad to post about it! One Lucky Duck is a cozy little restaurant/take out spot with a couple of tables on 17th street and Irving Place and it is a must stop if your in the hood and in the mood for a quick, delicious, nutrient packed vegan shake or juice concoction! I got myself a decadent cacao latte made with bananas, cashew milk, cacao and vanilla and it was ah-mazing! They also have real food, everything from salads to ice cream sundaes to satisfy your little vegan tummy! Also, be sure to check out their website oneluckyduck.com to view more about them and even order some vegan, raw goodies online! Yup, that’s right they sell mail order cookies, dangerous. Very dangerous.

Eat for Your Planet!

Last night I was saving the planet one meal at a time with out even realizing it! I stumbled upon this all vegetarian fast food-like establishment after kicking some butt at an audition around midtown west and decided I would test it out! It’s on 56th and 8th ave, right on the corner and is pretty casual and affordable. My whole meal was under 10 dollars, I got two sour cream black bean tacos, sweet potato chippers and a water. It was quite a good amount food for the price, not to mention yummy. Of course like the veggie-foodie dork I am, I took pictures and looked up their website, when to my surprise I stumbled upon a vision that extends far beyond just eating healthier vegetarian fare. Check out this insert from their vision statement that I found quite inspiring.

Otarian is based on our passion for, and dream of, a sustainable planet, and this vision is paramount to the concept and implementation of the Otarian philosophy. It is the tangible display of our hope in the intelligence of human kind to understand, accept and adapt to a more sustainable way.

One of the main contributors to global environmental degradation is the livestock industry. The effects of large-scale meat production are wide-spread and impact unsustainably on almost all aspects of the environment whilst creating other economic and social costs. Greenhouse gas emissions, inefficient utilisation of resources, deforestation, water pollution, land degradation, unfair trade, ill health and obesity are just some of these costs. The Otarian menu is completely meat-free, a delicious range of vegetarian options that eliminate the negative effects of livestock production whilst providing nourishment. Otarian serves dishes that travel the globe offering to all food that loves life and the planet. – otarian.com ‘our vision’

How cool is that?! A veggie fast food restaurant that is literally saving the planet one meal at a time?! I implore you to seek one of these babies out and have a meal, tell your friends to have a meal, etc. The world needs more people like the founders of Otarian, people who are looking at the bigger picture and providing fast and easy America with healthy options on the go and contributing to not only healthier people but a healthier planet!  Check out their website http://www.otarian.com/love-food/our-restaurants/new-york.html and start eating for your planet!

Skinny Spot: “Dig Inn”

20120423-192320.jpg

These little treasure troves of healthy lunches are popping up all over Manhattan! I highly suggest popping into one if you happen to spot one, I’ve been to the one on 18th by union square and the one downtown by Wall street but there are plenty more. Dig Inn makes getting delicious veggies fast and easy! My favorite picks are their veggie platter (where you can choose from five of their vegetarian or vegan sides) or their organic tofu platter (which comes with three sides). With sides like local spaghetti squash, balsamic mushrooms and broccoli and quinoa salad your lunch will be so yummy you’ll forget how healthy it is!

And as if this place didn’t already have my name written all over it- THEY MAKE FRESH JUICES! I’ve tried their all greens with apple, lemon and ginger and it is fabulous. With a slogan like “everything here is good for you”, you better make this your new favorite skinny spot this spring. Check them out at www.diginn.com/order to see if they deliver to your office! :)

One of My Favorite Things: Liquiteria

Made a quick stop by Liquiteria in the East Village before heading to set today to get myself some fresh juice! This adorable juice bar has quickly climbed the ranks in my book of must haves. Its the next best thing to making it myself at home, and none if the mess in my kitchen. I got a “Royal Flush” this morning, which is one of their special Rx mixes and it was refreshing and delicious. My usual is their “all greens” which is kale, spinach, romaine, parsley, celery, cucumber, apple, lemon and ginger. These juices will run you around $8.00 but trust me, it’s just what the doctor ordered, you’ll feel great after liquiteria get it’s hands on you!

Skinny Spot: ‘Whole Foods’

Yes, obviously Whole Foods Supermarket is an amazing skinny girl grocery shopping spot because they have TONS of uber healthy, low fat, sugar free, vegan, gluten-free and all natural versions of your favorite foods but this post is about why Whole Foods is a skinny spot for a meal when your running around during the day.

5. Vegan, Gluten-free and low fat scone and muffin options.

6. Premade Salad in three different sizes.(My Fav. is the goat cheese, walnut and cranberry one with baby spinach and fat free balsamic — yummm!)

8. Their nut bar is absolutely delicious if your looking for a yummy little sweet snack.

Take a little trip to ‘Whole Foods’ – you will find a hard time not falling in love with this heavenly place made for anyone who cares about what they put into their body.

Skinny Spot: ‘The Grey Dog’

Located walking distance from Union Square on University Place, The Grey Dog has climbed my list of favorite NYC eats. They also have another location on Carmine Street in the West Village and one coming soon to Chelsea on 16th street. Set up like an old school London pub, you wait online to order and pay for your food and then are sat at one of their cozy tables. The menu is extensive and mouth watering even for a skinny chick. They have a large array of iced and hot beverages and gluten free/sugar free baked goods!

I ordered an iced Green Tea and a #7 Sandwich which is thinly sliced turkey with Brie, sliced green apples and a raspberry mustard and comes on your choice of freshly baked bread. I chose whole grain like a good little skinny chick. The sandwich was huge and definitely enough for two meals, it tasted AMAZING and will probably be the #1 thing I will miss if/when I go Vegan.

My roommate ordered an Arnold Palmer (lemonade & iced tea)and baked Oatmeal. She thought the baked oatmeal was fabulous. It’s made with brown sugar and raisins and served in a bowl of steamed milk. It looked absolutely amazing and I’m not sure if they use whole or skim but I’m pretty sure if you requested skim or soy it wouldn’t be a problem. A possible Vegan (with Soy) and skinny chick favorite as well.

Those were just the two dishes we sampled today. I’m sure we will return, seeing as it was such a positive experience and I promise to review more of the menu for you. ;) For now, check out their website http://thegreydog.com/ to see their whole menu and various locations. Feel free to comment with your favorite Grey Dog dishes as well!
