Protect Your Magic

protect your magic

I had the wonderful opportunity to go to a very special event held by Live in the Grey called “Whiteboards + Wine” featuring special guest Fadia Kader, the fabulous woman behind those little reminders all over the city to “Protect Your Magic”. It was a gathering of all different kinds of magical, motivated minds who love to live in the grey [ Living in the Grey: Loving what you do and living what you love. Blending the professional with the playful. ] to discuss what exactly what our individual magic is and how we protect it.

Upon arriving, I was greeted by my lovely friend and fellow The Taste/team ludo lady, Sarah Ashley,  and her magically delicious toasts! Enter gratuitous food porn because.. why not?

This deceptive little treat is actually vegan! The chocolate spread is made from cacao and avocado. Clearly, I ate more of these than I'd care to admit. ;)

Okay enough of the food porn! Back to the MAGIC.

So the whole group of us, lead by Fadia, started discussing our individual magic. I loved hearing about what was going through everyone’s mind. We had different versions of our magic but they all really resonated. One man said his magic was discipline. That really spoke to me. He said that his magic came from his willpower, his ability to work hard every day for what he wanted. I kind of love that. I feel like that IS a lot of it. It’s MAGICAL to be able to get up everyday and hit the ground running, for anyone who’s ever launched a business or started a new diet plan, you can understand that magic. Sometimes our magic is our accountability to ourselves. What do you do when no one is looking? What do you do when no one is going to check up on you?

Another magic buzz word was AUTHENTICITY. Of course, this also sets my heart a flutter. How could you not agree? Your magic is in being that person that only YOU can be. Being your authentic self in every area of your life is magical. Ready to create some magic in your romantic relationships? Try adding a dose of authenticity. Want your business to blow up? Yup, you guessed it, be your authentic self. Trust me, people really dig that shit. It’s a blessing to be so connected to who you are and not let circumstances force you to be a less real version of yourself. Now, that’s some stuff worth protecting right there!

Well now that you have this magic, what do we do to protect it?

Someone offered,”Being selective with who you spend your time with and who you let in your life.”

Ah, yes. That quote about how you become most like the five people you spend the most time with. It’s increasingly hard to be around others who aren’t as tapped into their magic and not forget about your own. I think people forget that this process doesn’t have to judgmental. There are plenty of people I choose not to spend my time with yet don’t think anything negative about them. It’s a matter of making active choices to engage with people who energize you, fuel your fire and make you feel alive. Keep choosing those interactions and those relationships and you will naturally find the others falling to the side. I agree that this can be a tremendous part of protecting your magic. Ask yourself who in your life makes you feel energized, excited and expansive. Spend more time with them. When you find someone bringing you down or into their negativity, it’s okay to be a friend and help them out but be careful about letting it drag you down as well. Relationships with people who are constantly negative or unaligned with our highest good often need to be kept at a distance to protect our magic.

Along with that, respect people for where there at and find their magic, popped up in our discussion.  Not everyone may be the glittery, magical being you are, so it’s important to respect them for where they are on their path. I like to call this “looking for the gold” in people. Everyone has their gold or magic at all times, sometimes it’s just a little harder for us to see it because of what they’ve put over it. It’s a truly magical skill to be able to see the magic in someone who might not be able to see it in themselves but we have something to give. Making it your mission to see that nugget of gold in other people can be a really magical mission.

protect your magic white board

Confidence. Living in the moment. Purpose. Tools. So many beautiful thoughts floating around the room. I couldn’t help but change my mind about my magic. Hearing all these beautiful ideas made me realize that we all have A LOT of magic in us and that “making healthy food delicious”, which is what I initially wrote on the board when I entered, was just the very tip of the iceberg.

It became apparent to me that my magic is my mission. It’s what has me waking up everyday with a big smile on my face. It’s what gives me the energy to write a book, shoot a TV show, post on this blog and see all my clients every week. It fills my days with sunshine and sparkles. When I’m connected to my purpose, everything else can just fall into place. It’s the greatest gift I’ve ever been given. So how do I protect this magic of mine? Well, I mostly protect it in my morning  meditation ritual. I use my tools whether it be a kundalini meditation or just sitting and doing a visualization (like this one here for your inner rockstar). For me, it’s non-negotiable. When life hands me lemons, I can easily get thrown off track and lose my magic for a bit if I’m not practicing my protecting. Staying connected to my purpose, waking up everyday and being incredibly present to the work I’m here to do, the message I’m here to spread about health and happiness and all the people who I want to help, inspire and mentor to start living the life of their dreams, that’s my magic. And you best believe I’m going to protect it! ;)

What’s your magic?!

I’d love to hear in the comments below what your magic is and how you go about protecting it!

My 40 Day Journey with the Kundalini Meditation for Self Love

selflovemeditation

Today marked the first of 40 days I will be spending practicing this Kundalini meditation for self love. It was such a beautiful experience starting this journey and such a hurricane of events that lead me to it that I felt immediately compelled to share it with you once I finished my first day. This month I’ve been learning more than ever that everything comes back to our relationship with our self, self love is so paramount to our experience of every single day. Want to know why you’re not attracting the right guy or the right job or maybe even the right friends? It’s all a reflection of our self love and it doesn’t have to be a bad thing, it’s just a sign that there is more work to be done! Too often we associate lack of self love with people who have no self esteem or confidence, and that can be true but it’s not exclusively them. More of us than not suffer from some sort of self love deficiency at some point in our lives. For me, self love has been a continuous journey as I’ve gotten older, I’m constantly evolving, loving myself more, taking better care of myself but always looking to go even further, clean up even more negative beliefs.

Of course, like any good break up does, my recent romantic unraveling brought up some pretty important issues to the surface. More importantly, it showed me I still had even farther to go on my journey to self love. It’s when we are in the midst of rejection that our self love is truly put to the test. And I have to say, to a certain degree, I really impressed myself. I have come a long way and I certainly am in a very different (better!) place now than I’ve been with some break ups in the past. Although, I must admit when someone you love leaves you, it’s easy to fall into the whirlwind of negative thoughts like “what did I do wrong?” “why wasn’t I good enough?” “what made me so unlovable?” and on and on and on. I am certainly not immune but it did shake me up and make me realize that I needed to get to work. I KNOW that my truth is none of those crazy thoughts but sometimes it takes going a step farther to really kill those negative self thoughts at the root instead of just slapping an affirmation over them. With this meditation, I’m digging deep, bringing whatever is there up so it can be healed and loving myself and taking care of myself through this  However, I do want to stress that self love isn’t just important when you are in the middle of crisis or feeling rejected, self love is important in your everyday life. It plays a major part on what practices we incorporate into our lives, everything from what we eat, how much we sleep to how we relate to other people. When our self love is burning bright that’s when we’re feeling our best, that’s when we attract amazing things into our life and that’s when we effortlessly eat healthy, commit to a daily exercise or meditation practice and set boundaries with people in our lives who bring us down, that’s when everything starts FLOWING!!

So I ask you to join me (or just follow along and hold me accountable) on the 40 day journey using the kundalini meditation for self love. In kundalini yoga it is recommended to do every new meditation for 40 days to get it’s full effects and then to continue it beyond that to further ingrain it in your subconscious.

The meditation consists of three different parts. Each have a different allotted time and a different arm posture.

PART 1: Sit in a comfortable position (cross legged – easy pose for me) with your spine straight. Place your right hand palm down a maximum of six inches over the crown of your head. Bend your left elbow in by your side and bring your left palm up to shoulder height with the palm facing forward. Focus your closed eyes downward on your chin. Breathe in slow, long, deep breathes with feelings of affection.

Hold this posture for 11 minutes. ( you can chop the time in half if 11 is too long when your start off)

PART 2: Still seated, extend your arms straight out from your shoulders, parallel to the ground and palms facing down. Same eye focus and long deep breathes.

Hold this posture for 3 minutes or chop it down to 1.5 to correlate with the previous section.

PART 3: Stretch your arms straight up in the air, with no bend in the elbows. Keep your eyes focused on your chin still and continue long deep breathes.

Hold this for the same amount of time you held part 2.

To close, take a long inhale and hold for 10 seconds while reaching your hands high to the sky and then exhale. I personally like to sit with my palms up for a little while afterwards to really soak in the energy of the work I’ve just done before I open my eyes.

My personal playlist for this meditation is “I am light” by India Arie, “Magic” by Cold Play, “Just Do You” by India Arie, “All of me” by John Legend, “Moved by You” by India Arie. I set the timer app on my iphone for the allotted time spans and it plays a little chime when I’m ready to move on to the next part! Feel free to comment below if you have any questions, comments or want to share with me what meditation your currently working on!

HOW TO GET OUT OF YOUR OWN WAY

#girlboss quote

In the book I just finished reading “#Girlboss”, Sophia Amuroso says,”Learn to create your own opportunities. Know that there is no finish line; fortune favors action. Race balls-out toward the extraordinary life that you’ve always dreamed of, or still haven’t had time to dream up.”

First of all, I highly recommend “#Girlboss”, if you can’t tell, I absolutely loved it. Second of all, Sophia is a thousand percent right and I could not agree with her more. FORTUNE FAVORS ACTION. The only way to get out of your own way is by taking action. You may be saying but I don’t even know what kind of action take, I can’t even bring myself to begin. Well there is an action for that as well. The best thing you can do for yourself is start moving yourself forward and here are three of the biggest ways to get into action by taking very small steps..

1. Make ONE small tweak. Getting into action doesn’t have to be a massive ordeal. It can be as simple as waking up an extra 15 minutes earlier to meditate in the morning or making a conscious effort to eat green veggies twice a day. Just find one small thing and promise yourself to get into action with it and watch how that naturally will help you build momentum to go even farther.

2. Get CLEAR on what you want. Write down on a piece of paper or journal it out and get really clear about what you desire, whether it’s personal, business or health oriented. You will be instantly better at taking actions in line with your goals when you are crystal clear about what your goals are. I find it helpful to keep that piece of paper or note in my wallet or next to my bed so that I’m constantly reminded of it.

3. Ask for HELP. Whether it’s a professional like me who can help you through health coaching or business advice or it’s just a trusty friend or family member, sometimes when we’re blocked we just need an outside perspective to help us along in the right direction. A lot of my clients hire me solely to help keep them accountable, in action and on the path to their goals. I also am a big advocate for “accountability partners”, if you can find a friend or family member who you can check in with regularly and make sure each other is on track they can be worth their weight in gold. It’s important to understand that asking for help, whether it’s just a silent prayer to the universe, in the form of typing in Google’s search box or sending an email to set up an appointment, is a crucial but small step to getting out of your own way.

I hope that helps you start taking action this week! If you need help busting through those blocks or finding what actions you need to take feel free to email me at cassandra@gosweetandskinny.com to set up a breakthrough session and get yourself in to action. If you have success with these tools and are able to get out of your own way with it, I ‘d love to hear! Feel free to write about  your experience in the comments below or post it on the facebook page and I’ll be sure to respond!

Owning Our Food Sensitivities

Owning Our Food Sensitivities: Let's stop apologizing for staying away from food that negatively affects us and start treating them the way we would any other food allergy.

The topic of owning our food sensitivities manifested itself in numerous conversations this week, between clients, friends and then finally my own inner dialogue  in my journal, it was just bursting to come out! I wanted to out myself with this little instagram note, stating all my negative food reactions and also use it as a reminder to myself on a daily basis why I actively choose to not incorporate those things into my diet. I often recommend tools similar to this to some of my coaching clients when we are food-mood journaling and going through the discovery process of finding which foods work with our bodies and which foods cause negative reactions in us but last night I made this for myself for a reason beyond just reminding myself how gluten, sugar, and dairy effect me. I made this to empower me when I have to talk to the people in my life about my dietary preferences.

How many of you have felt judgement or the need to explain yourself when you start taking the food that bothers you out of your diet? I know I have! It’s actually one of my biggest stressors to be perfectly honest. I hate having to explain or defend myself to certain people in my life every time I order from a menu. You wouldn’t attack or questions someone who’s allergic for nuts for asking the restaurant if there’s nuts in an entree, then why would you roll your eyes if someone asks if there’s sugar or gluten or dairy, etc?  To that same point, you wouldn’t feel like you needed to apologize for having a nut allergy so don’t feel like you need to apologize for choosing not to eat food that doesn’t make you feel good! Trust me I know how hard this can be, I’ve watched clients struggle with it and it’s certainly come up time and time again in my life so I wanted to give you 3 tools today to really start owning your food sensitivities that I’m also going to be incorporating into my daily life!

3 TOOLS FOR OWNING YOUR FOOD SENSITIVITIES

1. TREAT IT LIKE AN ALLERGY. A food sensitivity is really an allergy of sorts anyway it’s just not always severe enough to send you to the hospital or lead you to popping a ton of Benadryl so your throat doesn’t close up. However, when you eat food that’s not working for your body, there is a very real reaction going on! Get clear on your symptoms, use tools like writing them down in your phone, as a graphic like mine or on an index card you carry in your purse so that when you’re tempted to eat them you are reminded of the consequences and can make a healthier choice for your body.

2. TALK ABOUT IT LIKE AN ALLERGY. When people ask you why you’re not eat X, instead of saying,”well everyone knows that X is not good for you, I read this article saying that if you eat X then yada yada yada insert whatever horrible things may be associated with X.” make it personal to you and say,” I don’t eat X because I have a really negative reaction to it, I experience X, Y, and Z symptoms and just feel better when I leave it out of my diet.” The power of this lies not only in owning your truth and prioritizing your well-being but also in letting the person off the hook. When we make something “bad” that the other person might consume, they immediately feel defensive or even guilty and that’s a lose-lose. When you make it about yourself and what happens for you, it’s genuine, approachable and much more effective at communicating your message with out making the other person feel judged.

3. PLANNING AHEAD. I think the worst part of not eating foods for me is when you go to a party or a restaurant and you have a really tough time ordering off the menu or finding something you can eat. It’s not that I actually mind, it’s more that I feel bad that everyone else now feels terrible because I can’t eat! So to side-step this I always look up new restaurants and check out what items off the menu I can order ahead of time or even call up and see if they offer a vegan option, steamed veggies, etc. Most places are more than happy to accommodate but figuring it out ahead of time makes everything a little smoother when your sitting down ready to enjoy dinner. I also love bringing food whenever someone invites me to a gathering, I love to cook and share my food so it’s genuinely fun for me but it’s also a good way to know that there’s always at least one thing I can eat at the party!

I hope these tools prove to be useful to you, I know they have really helped my life tremendously. And at the end of the day, you just got to OWN IT! You are such a magnificent, enlightened being that’s doing the best you possibly can to be your highest self and to take care of your physical and mental wellbeing and that is a beautiful thing. Stand in that presence, in that greatness, in that light and truth. Don’t let other’s opinions or negativity bring you down. More than likely, if there judging you it’s because they are not as far along the path as you are and seeing you show up for yourself like that reminds them of the work they need to do for themselves.

Sending you peace, love and light my GSS girls! xo!

My First Half Marathon

completing my first half marathon at the More Fitness Magazine Women's Half Marathon in Central Park, NYC, disordered eating, institute of integrative nutrition, healthy meal plans, healthy smoothie recipes

I am incredibly proud to say that I successfully completed my first half marathon this past weekend in Central Park at the More/Fitness Magazine Women’s Half Marathon. 13.1 miles of pure blissful power and a major check off my bucket list (yes I know I’m getting started early, but why not!?) .

First, let me say I’m not a runner.

My friends find this hilarious because I do run from time to time but only for a race or a cause, usually both. What I mean is, I’m not that girl that loves waking up at the crack of dawn and pounding the pavement. I despise the treadmill even more than the streets and in total honesty, I find running extraordinarily boring at times.  I’m a yoga girl, I’ll get up early to get to class, love twisting my body in all sorts of fun postures and will happily do it several times a week. So running was all about going out of my comfort zone and challenging my endurance.

I trained for about a month and a half before the actual race and let me tell you IT WAS HARD, for me at least. I seriously give props to runners who do it day after day. It definitely taught me about commitment and pushing myself. Gosh, it was too easy to give up after 3 miles when it’s just me out there in the park and my foot starts hurting or I just get bored on the treadmill. Yet I’m so happy I didn’t, I pushed and pushed and broke past my comfort zone.

A couple weeks into training I gave up sugar, they’ll be a vlog on that coming soon, but suffice to say the first few days running on no sugar (aka no easy carbs) were extraordinarily challenging but it didn’t take too long to adjust. By the time race day came, I didn’t even eat anything in the morning and I was fine!

training for my first half marathon, the more fitness magazine women's half marathon in central park. Runners in NYC on race day. disordered eating, institute of integrative nutrition, healthy meal plans, healthy smoothie recipes

The night before the race I did make some pretty kick ass healthy, sugar free “cookies” to carb load. That recipe will be in this week’s email blast so sign up below if you want it! They were delicious and did just the trick. I carried a few of them in my pocket for the actual race, just in case, but never ended up needing them.

Race day was actually leagues better than any of my practice runs. There’s so much energy in the air, so many people all around and I made a kick ass playlist with the help of some friends, so I was pumped. I ran the first 8 miles relatively seamlessly, although for anyone who knows Central Park, some of those hills are a killer! It wasn’t till mile 8 which was an typical practice run for me that I started feeling it, had to push through, pump up the tunes (we’re talking Britney Spear’s “Work B*tch”, American Authors “Best Day of My Life” and Sara Barielles “Brave”) to keep me going.

By mile 11, it was actually more painful to walk for the 30 seconds I was guzzling water at the hydration stations than it was to keep pace and run. I ended up running the entire thing other than those water breaks where I simply stopped so I didn’t choke on the H2O I was inhaling.

Once I saw that finish line in sight it was like an extra burst of energy and the high of knowing that I completed it (and it better time than I had imagined) was indescribable. I was walking on sunshine.

Will I do it again? Maybe. The Brooklyn half is in month. ;)

Letting Go

20140327-071803.jpg
“By letting go, it all gets done.” – Lao Tzu

This quote has really been resonating with me the past few days. I’ve got “to-do” lists longer than my legs and all sorts of obligations. Sometimes I meditate multiple times through out the day just to keep my stress level in order. And then it hit me the other day, to just let it go and trust that it will get done. Now this may not work when you are trying to eat healthy and make new habits for yourself but as far as work goes, I really think it helps. I’ve opened up the window for more inspiration, been guided towards certain opportunities and felt more in flow with my professional desires. When we are taking right minded action, not sitting on the couch eating potato chips, but also not forcing and pushing ourselves to finish our to do list at the expense of our well being, we get into a groove.
I have joked around for a while now with some of my girlfriends that I will spend all day sending out emails and pitching different ideas and it’ll be that random Thursday morning email from someone I didn’t even reach out to that will be a game changer. This quote was a reminder to me to let go and allow the universe to take over. To trust that we don’t have to PUSH so hard, we can flow.

What areas of your life are you pushing in right now? How might you be able to let go and let it flow? Comment below and let’s get a conversation going!

I’m NOT perfect and that’s PERFECTLY okay with me!

20140122-092523.jpg

Yes, that’s a screenshot from my phone that I took this morning when I was awoken with lovely texts and emails from my girlfriends who had already seen my article on MindBodyGreen.com! Can I tell you, BEST WAY TO WAKE UP EVER! This article is super special to me because it was inspired by recent events in my life. After ABC’s The Taste started airing, I started getting some hateful tweets, facebook comments and emails. Most of the were from vegans or vegetarians who felt I was making a mockery of their beliefs by trying new things on TV. Although I personally never label myself, I do cook and bake almost 100% vegan and that was portrayed on the show. It absolutely broke my heart to have people from a community I have so loved and stood for over the years turn on me, it made me really sad but ultimately it didn’t make me feel like I had done anything wrong. Through their hate I realized just how okay I was not being perfect and how, in fact, I believe it is my imperfectness that helps me spread my message so widely. I am not an elitist, I do not believe you have to be at a certain level of eating to be truly healthy. I believe in real people making real changes and working towards their personal best health and happiness everyday and I will stand by that.

So I am proud to share this article with you because not only is it OKAY to not be PERFECT – it also goes to show you how the universe works in mysterious ways and can turn a hurricane of hate into a wave of love and acceptance. http://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-12350/3-reasons-im-proud-to-be-imperfect.html

get out of your own way

20131226-123115.jpg

You ARE far too smart to stand in your own way!! STOP IT! Okay, enough tough love, but seriously what are you getting in your own way about? Take a few minutes right now, take three deep breaths and ask yourself – where am I getting in my own way? The answer might surprise you. It might even be a major breakthrough!
I recently did this for myself a couple weeks ago and had a radical revelation. I was getting in my way in a MASSIVE way with my work. This might sound ridiculous but unconsciously I think I was really scared of my unlimited potential. I was SCARED of success!! There is a great Marianne Williamson quote that goes,”Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.” And that is exactly what was happening to me.
Luckily, the greatest blessing is in the acknowledgment of where we are blocking ourselves because then we can simply open our eyes to how we can bust through that block. I’ll spare you the story of how I busted through mine but it’s safe to say now I am more ready than ever to embrace success with open arms.
Now for you, if your dealing with a body weight issue, this could look like being scared to be skinny! Are you nervous to have attention called to you? Does it scare you a little bit to step into that ideal body? Maybe it’s the effort that it will take to get there that scares you? Take a minute to think about what it could be. This could be a great time to free write some ideas. Whatever you come up with, ask yourself, what am I sacrificing by holding on to this belief? Write that list, get honest and emotional with yourself. Decide that you want whatever it is more than you want to hold on to that limiting belief.

Have a beautiful day! I’d love to hear about what beautiful blocks you’ve discovered – comment below so that I can help support you!

WHY WOMEN SHOULD WEIGHT LIFT

In honor of GoSweetandSkinny.com’s Fall of Fitness, I’ve called in women’s weight lifting guru and certified personal trainer (and one of my lovely girlfriends!), Kaitlin Holiday to answer a few questions about working out for us less than savvy gym goers! Stay tuned for the whole series, this particular video is about WHY WOMEN SHOULD WEIGHT LIFT :)

Turning the day around!

20131104-113358.jpg

“Everything we do is infused with the energy we do it with” – wise words from one of my spiritual gurus, Miss Marianne Williamson! Hit all too close to home this morning when I overslept my alarm and woke up when I was supposed to be on my way to set for the day. Absolutely worst way to wake up, right?! Despite having set at least five alarms, my body obviously didn’t feel like cooperating this AM. Naturally, I’m frantic, trying to remedy the situation and completely beating myself up but as soon as I caught my breath and was on my way I had to have a mini intervention. First, I serendipitously saw this quote and secondly, I knew that there was nothing my self-loathing was helping at the moment. So I put my big girl panties on, took a few deep breathes and allowed myself to be human. In that minute I made the choice to continue the rest of my day in peace instead of letting that frantic energy resonate with everything I did for the rest of the day. I hope this can inspire and move you to face your Mondays (and any other days) with love and peace. Maybe you can do one better than me and make that choice for peace before you get too far into that negative spiral! Our days will go as positively as our mindset allows, so let’s all have Marvelous Monday!

Peace, Love and Cupcakes,

Cassandra

How do you use your time?

20131016-162021.jpg
Laugh away baby. It’s a thousand percent true! You know that person in your life that always seems to get a ton of things accomplished in the same twenty-four hours you might as well of sleepwalked through? They don’t have some secret pass to stop time just to get more done and make people like you feel inadequate! They just manage their time wisely.
And guess what?!
So can you!! How? Well it’s the same way you manage anything! Want to see why you’re not losing weight? Write down what your eating so you can see all those extra calories you’re not considering. Want to know why your bank account is embarrassingly small? Well you would write your income and expenses down, right? So why not write down HOW YOU SPEND YOUR TIME?!

Try it! For one week, bare with me and log how you spend every hour of the day and then at the end of the week go back and look for “wasted” time. Anything you think could be a better use of your time and circle it. Now Write down all those things you’d LOVE to get done and start inserting them into those circles spots! Give it a shot. It can totally change the way you use your time. ;)

20131016-163240.jpg

Are you peaceful?

20131014-112513.jpg
Kicking off our #quoteoftheday! Are you peaceful? Life can be chaotic and we can’t always control what’s going on out there in the world BUT we can control how it effects our internal environment. I challenge you to take a minute today and choose to remain peaceful on the inside. Take notice of when things in your life stir you up and how it feels when you make the conscious choice for PEACE! :)

Defining Myself

I need to open up with you about something I have struggled with for a LONG, long time. This week it was really brought to the forefront of my mind because of a really exciting opportunity! Unfortunately, I can not officially  let you know what I’m doing but let’s just say it involves my handy-work in the kitchen and a lot of people watching me. (wink, wink) I promise to let you know as soon as I LEGALLY can! But for the purpose of today’s blog, let’s just say I was asked by someone relatively important if I was a vegan chef. In that moment, I was forced to do something that I was very uncomfortable with..

DEFINE MYSELF.

At first, I said,” well,  yes, I am mostly known for my vegan cupcakes.”But after a few seconds I corrected myself. ” I don’t only cook vegan, I just try to make really delicious things healthier for people with out losing the whole ‘delicious’ part of the equation.” It felt weird and I’m sure they weren’t pleased with my Switzerland- like answer.  Honestly, I get this question A LOT  so I felt like it had to be addressed and leave it to the universe to create such a formal occasion for it! Truth is some ( NOT ALL) vegans don’t really like us ‘swiss’ types either, people have their beliefs (carnivore, vegan, low carber) and they feel very passionate about them. Don’t get me wrong, I’m passionate, but I’m passionate aboutPEOPLE GETTING HEALTHY AND ENJOYING IT! Yes, I personally, a hundred percent agree with veganism but even I occasionally have an egg or want a piece of salmon. I don’t beat myself up, I’m human, I do my best and I listen to my body.
More importantly though, I don’t want to single anyone out. I want to help you whether you’re used to eating 4 cheese burgers a week or you are ready to go raw vegan! So my cooking, when it’s for me, is mostly vegan/vegetarian but you bet I can cook almost anything and I want to be able to cook anything! I aim to provide a variety of healthy recipes and tips on the site and as well as when I’m one on one with my coaching clients.
Starting to clean up what you put on your plate and take charge of your mind and body is no small task but where there’s a will there is a way. So whether you’re still eating steak or you are on a juice fast, it’s cool. Start at your own pace, don’t get intimidated, maybe try a juice for breakfast or make one of my vegan treats that look yummy and incorporate it in your day to day. Slowly but surely you will start learning this whole other beautiful palette that your body wants and craves. But for now, if you want a healthy, good for you recipe with chicken or meat, feel free to reach out and email me. There is no “perfect” diet, there is only what works best for you body right now. We’ve all grown up with  a very similar processed, American diet and we’re all at different stairs on the staircase to our happiest, most vibrant, fit and thriving bodies. I want to be there every step of the way because everyone deserves a chance ( and the help) to get that fabulous place where we feel amazing, look fabulous and love our lives.

So if I’m going to define my cooking style, I’m a maker of delicious, healthy dishes that help people lead their happiest lives and promote their over all well being.

I simply refuse to be put in a box.

MOST RELAXING YOGA EVER

I kid you not when I say this yoga video will literally make you feel like you just had a massage and sleep like a baby! I know you all know how much I love trying out various youtube yoga videos from time to time and that’s exactly how I stumbled upon this gem. Now, I will be honest, it’s not much of a work out, it’s definitely more stretching. So, I wasn’t necessarily looking for it but I wanted a yoga routine that wouldn’t keep me from falling asleep afterwards because it was pretty late at night but I had to get SOMETHING in!  Light a candle, burn so incense and let this video just loosen up every muscle in your body. I’ve had a really crazy week of recipe testing and prepping for my upcoming trip to the west coast and I truly believe stumbling upon this gem on youtube was the universes’s way of giving me a little “self-care” present! So bookmark this page and keep it for that week when you’re dying for a spa treatment or massage and just don’t have the time or money. You will thank me! ;)

What to do when your friends/family don’t support your new healthy choices

This post was inspired by one of my favorite people, Miss Gabby Bernstein. I was watching her lecture from Well +Good’s Summer of Miracles and someone stood up at the end and asked what to do about people in your life who don’t support your spiritual growth. Instantly I thought of Go Sweet and Skinny and how this same question is also pretty relevant to new healthy habits!

What do you do when your friends/family don’t support your new healthy, happy ways?!

Well, I know what your dealing with and boy, oh, boy, do I know that it’s not fun! You thinking running a happy, healthy living company would eliminate a lot of people who weren’t into that sort of thing from my life? Guess again. Whether it’s the health benefits of juicing or the importance of a plant based diet, I’ve experienced more than my fair share of naysayers.

The good news is that whether its your parents or spouse looking at you a little funny or your friends making there best attempts at squandering your health minded efforts, the answer is the same.

SHOW, DON’T TELL. (aka be the light house)

That’s right, the solution is to DO NOTHING. Don’t try to explain it to people who aren’t supporting you or genuinely curious. Just do your own thing and keep on your path to the happy, healthy life you are working towards! Why? Because nothing you say will work, but just wait till they start seeing how amazing your body looks, how your skin glows, they’ll want to know why you’re so happy and energized all the time. When they see the results of what your doing and how wonderful it has been for you, they will start asking and be listening with different ears. All of a sudden they will genuinely want to know what your doing. This might mean meeting certain friends for tea instead of dinner if they’ll be über critical of what you eat or simply just not offering up much of what your doing for your health to certain people. There’s no reason to make their negativity a part of your life, deep down you know you are doing something AMAZING for yourself and feeling better everyday.

So be the light house. Work on getting your fire burning bright and they will all come around in time. The best way to communicate our message is to LIVE IT everyday. Lead by example my lovely peeps!

Are you ready to get fit!? Want to develop an AMAZING habit of getting your body moving EVERY DAY?! Well, I did and that is why I decided to embark on my #40DaysofFitness challenge! For the next 40 days I am pledging to get some sort of exercise for at least 30 mins a day, if not more. Why? Well it’s so easy to get busy and forget how important physical fitness is to both our mind and our body! I know I’m totally guilty of it, I love my yoga but when I have a ton of things going on sometimes it slips to the bottom of the list. When we’re busy and stressed is actually when we need to get moving the most! Why 40 days? Well it takes about 40 days to really make something a habit, a ritual, something you just do. And don’t we all want being active for at least 30 mins a day something that we just do? Join me! Comment below to make your pledge and start tweeting + instagraming your #40daysofFitness! I’m SHARING my BROWNIES!

These past six months have been wondrous to say the least. It’s truly been incredible to watch the Go Sweet and Skinny crew go from a group of people who went to school with me at some point or knew me through some NY social circle to a much larger group of amazing people determined to lead happy, healthy, inspired lives from all over the country! YAY! I am so happy to have you all joining me on this journey and feel so grateful to help provide you with the tools to living an amazing, vibrant, healthy life. It’s an interesting observation that I had I tonight though, because the bigger it grows, the larger my desire to stay personal is. I feel like more than ever I am writing super specific and intimate posts about what I’m going through because whether you actually went to high school with me or you happened to stumble upon my book on amazon, I want you to KNOW me, really know me and feel like I’m just that health nut girlfriend that gives you really awesome tips and killer recipes when you’re in a bind! My close friends get such a kick out of my youtube videos on GoSweetandSkinnyTV because it’s just like actually talking to me, I’m that ridiculously myself in them for you and that makes me really happy to hear.

So anyways, I know you’re wondering what in the world I meant by “sharing my brownies”, am I doing a vegan brownie give-a-way?! Sadly, no, but maybe at some point in the future if there is a big enough uproar I will. I was listening to an incredibly inspirational seminar by Fabienne Fredrickson and she gave a really touching antidote that really tugged on some strings for me and I just felt like I had to share so that you guys could really feel where I’m coming from. Forgive me for butchering it, Fabienne, but here’s my spark notes version of it:

Imagine you’re hosting a dinner party and all the guests are in the living room while you are baking brownies in the kitchen. The aroma of the baking brownies is seeping through the house and guests happen to wander in and out of the kitchen asking what you’re up to. Now let’s fast forward to your brownies being done, all cut up, cooled and put on a plate. Guests are coming in to see what’s going on but you are just huddled in a corner with your plate of brownies and you are not letting anyone else eat them!

Seems pretty ridiculous, right? Why would you bake delicious brownies and then not share them with ANYONE!? Well Fabienne used this to compare to those of us with service oriented businesses being afraid of marketing our services. Safe to say, it really hit home. When Go Sweet and Skinny started to take off and I saw the need for individualized guidance, offering up one on one assistance to help my amazing followers on their own specific path to a happy, healthy, AMAZEBALLS life was a total no brainer!

AND THEN I STARTED HOARDING MY BROWNIES!!

I got so worried that people might think I was forcing them to buy something or trying to “sell” them on coaching that I was very hush-hush about it. I offered it when people came to me specifically looking for guidance and touched on it here and there without making any huge waves. Fabienne made realize that not only was I totally incorrect in my assumptions but that I was depriving you of the amazing services I have to offer by not even letting you know that I offer them! And that’s when it really hit me.  Not to mention, of course, I received some very loving emails saying that they saw a post about my FREE 30 minute breakthrough sessions and had never even known that I offered an one on one counseling package despite being avid followers of my facebook and blog. Whoa! Thanks for the re-enforcement universe!

Well, it worked, I am here and I am happy to say that I WILL NOW BE SHARING MY BROWNIES!  I will share my brownies with love and a smile from here on out! If I can help someone by offering my support one on one as they embark on their journey towards a life and body they love  - I want them to know about it! So be prepared to hear a bit more from me on this now. I’m talking LOUD + PROUD now. Of course, the recipes, tips and inspiration will always be the foundation of everything GSS but I’m really excited to be able to guide people individually on their specific path to health and happiness! It can be really hard and confusing at times to make massive change all by yourself and we all have different areas in our life we could use a little reinforcement in to help us push through to the next level. I’m here for those people who are ready and willing and need a partner to help them climb up the rest of the mountain to healthy body bliss because it’s so much easier when you have a guide who’s been there and done it and knows the path.

On that note, if you’d like a FREE 30 minute clarity session with me to get a taste of what we could accomplish together and set you off in the right direction, email me at gosweetandskinny@gmail.com to request a date and time. I’d love to meet you!

HOW CAN YOU SHARE YOUR BROWNIES TOO!?

Well it’s not just me that needs to share my brownies, you’ve got a plate too!! A great, easy way to start sharing your brownies is to start spreading the love, inspiration and tips you find on GSS as well as your other favorite healthy living blogs. Share healthy recipes or inspiration posts on facebook or twitter, instagram healthy food pics or motivational quotes. You don’t need to be an authority to pass along the brownies! If you’ve found some delicious stuff, take a little for yourself and then spread the love!! Not only will it make you feel amazing but you are helping other people have a chance to enjoy them as well. So go on my darlings, let’s make sure all the guests at the party of our life get a chance to indulge in a brownie!
