What to do when your friends/family don’t support your new healthy choices

This post was inspired by one of my favorite people, Miss Gabby Bernstein. I was watching her lecture from Well +Good’s Summer of Miracles and someone stood up at the end and asked what to do about people in your life who don’t support your spiritual growth. Instantly I thought of Go Sweet and Skinny and how this same question is also pretty relevant to new healthy habits!

What do you do when your friends/family don’t support your new healthy, happy ways?!

Well, I know what your dealing with and boy, oh, boy, do I know that it’s not fun! You thinking running a happy, healthy living company would eliminate a lot of people who weren’t into that sort of thing from my life? Guess again. Whether it’s the health benefits of juicing or the importance of a plant based diet, I’ve experienced more than my fair share of naysayers.

The good news is that whether its your parents or spouse looking at you a little funny or your friends making there best attempts at squandering your health minded efforts, the answer is the same.

SHOW, DON’T TELL. (aka be the light house)

That’s right, the solution is to DO NOTHING. Don’t try to explain it to people who aren’t supporting you or genuinely curious. Just do your own thing and keep on your path to the happy, healthy life you are working towards! Why? Because nothing you say will work, but just wait till they start seeing how amazing your body looks, how your skin glows, they’ll want to know why you’re so happy and energized all the time. When they see the results of what your doing and how wonderful it has been for you, they will start asking and be listening with different ears. All of a sudden they will genuinely want to know what your doing. This might mean meeting certain friends for tea instead of dinner if they’ll be über critical of what you eat or simply just not offering up much of what your doing for your health to certain people. There’s no reason to make their negativity a part of your life, deep down you know you are doing something AMAZING for yourself and feeling better everyday.

So be the light house. Work on getting your fire burning bright and they will all come around in time. The best way to communicate our message is to LIVE IT everyday. Lead by example my lovely peeps!

Make more “ME” time!

metime

Feeling stressed, drained and just, well, not taken care of!? Well honey, I have some good and bad news, the BAD is that it’s your own fault, and the GOOD is that since it’s your own fault, YOU CAN TOTALLY CHANGE IT! Whether it’s our friendships, our work relationships or our significant other, all too often we let ourselves take the backseat to outside priorities. Of course, we think we’re doing the right thing when we’re putting others before us but we don’t realize that not only are we cheating ourselves out of some quality, much needed “me” time, but we are cheating them out of getting to hang with our best, most AMAZING self!

Too often I have heard the story, “I don’t have time to go to the gym because after I come home from work I just want to hang out with my boyfriend” and on and on insert your own excuse having to do with too much work, too many social obligations or your romantic partner. I have definitely been guilty of the same! Especially when you’re in a relationship, you get in to a routine, your schedules are crazy enough, you feel guilty stealing time away to go to the gym or to cook yourself a healthy meal, or even to meditate. When work gets crazy, yoga class seems to fall by the waste side and we give in to carb loaded, sugary treats to deal with the stress. Even friends can stand in between our own self-care if they’re insisting on you going out every night and skimping on sleep to indulge in alcohol and late night snacks.

Well first off, FORGIVE YOURSELF! That’s right, take a deep breath and let it go. It’s over, it’s the past, you are not doing that anymore! From this day forward YOU are putting YOU first and let me tell you why that will be the best decision you ever made in your life..

When we put our foot down and say “HEY! I have to take care of ME right now!” not only will people around you listen but gosh darn it, they might even respect you more. Crazy, huh? A funny thing happens when you start making yourself a priority, people are attracted you, they actually want to be around you MORE. Why? Isn’t it selfish not to put the needs of your company, significant other or friends first? NOPE. Obviously, I am not telling you to be an insensitive jerk right now, so don’t go cold hearted on me but within reason you need to make taking care of yourself a priority.

By putting your self-care first, you are going to be an even better employee, partner or friend! When you are HAPPY, stress free and healthy, you are in ideal form to be your most wonderful you for all the people you care about in your life. Honestly, even if your boyfriend or boss give you a little trouble at first when you carve out that gym time, spend a little extra time preparing a healthy meal, or sneak off to meditate for a couple minutes, let them. It’s only a matter of time till they realize how much that time really helps create a more optimized YOU! The best thing you can do for everyone in your life is to be happy and healthy. SERIOUSLY. When you are happy and healthy you do everything in your life with more ease, you’re more enjoyable to be around, you’re more stimulating to work with and boy, oh boy, will you be more attractive to your man. Oh wait, did I mention that YOU’LL BE HAPPIER AND HEALTHIER?! You get a pretty big bonus out of this added “me” time as well and there is nothing to feel guilty about there!

So take a moment, reflect on your schedule right now and ask yourself if you’re dedicating enough time to YOU. Where are you compromising to appease someone else in your life? I challenge you to take back some of that time RIGHT NOW. Literally, schedule in some “ME” time. You can start small if you’re a little nervous about it and increase steadily each week. Trust me, you will want to because you’re going to love what an amazing effect this has on your life! Pick something you would like to do for you, maybe a yoga class or some group work out, maybe gym time, maybe just taking the extra time to make yourself a healthy dinner every night. Whatever it is, commit to it and tell the people you care about in your life that it’s important to you and you will be unavailable during that time each week or day. Rest assured, they will understand, even if it takes a little time for some of them. You are important! Your body, your health and your happiness is absolutely paramount to leading an extraordinary life and you deserve the “ME” time it takes to maintain it!

Feel free to comment below and let me know what you are committing to do for your ME time this week! :)

Yoga: Now with INTENTION!

20120511-103956.jpg
I have been a self proclaimed yoga-junkie since before Lululemon started making amaze balls yoga pants. I can find myself relatively comfortable in almost any class my little heart desires to step into, and I say this not to brag but to really emphasize my point here. As many of you may have noticed from following the website and YouTube videos, I have just recently gotten really into meditating. Meditating was something that I flirted with for years! I tried it off and on in college and always sat and focused on my breath at the end of yoga class but never really incorporated it into my yoga practice. I know, this might seem insane, could I really have done yoga all these years and NOT figured it out till now!? Well I’m totally calling myself out on this one in hopes that it will help you take your practice to the next level or maybe even give yoga a second try if it wasn’t your thing at first. A couple nights a go I went to the “power yoga” class at my gym, I was juicing during the day and in a very meditative mood as it was but then the instructor took a minute and spoke to us about setting an intention for our practice. For those of you that have been to yoga class, this is fairly common. However, for the first time, I really set a powerful intention for my practice. In fact, it had nothing to do with my body and wasn’t directly related to the yoga work I was doing but to the meditative work I was doing at home. I instantly felt more calm and centered in my practice, my intention gave me strength and balance. In some of the more challenging poses I really felt like I was harnessing power towards my intention. Yoga went from an amazing work out where I stretch my already uber flexible body and feel like jello when I leave to this other worldly experience, I don’t think I’ve ever been so relaxed and grounded while sweating so much! I felt empowered and balanced afterwards like I had gotten a mind massage, if you can imagine that. So I HAD to share with you guys! I will never go back to doing intention-less yoga again and I strongly encourage you all to challenge yourself this week by taking a yoga class and setting a powerful intention and just letting that experience guide you! Let me know how it goes! Comment below after class!

Clean Up Your Diet

20130327-155356.jpg

Clean up your diet! But before you even begin to do that you should clean up your kitchen!! That’s a real pic of my actual kitchen cabinet before and after I cleaned and organized it. I don’t know if you can tell but in the latter picture, I have my spices and canned goods on the first most accessible shelf, my baking products on the middle shelf (because I use them a great deal) and then my carb stuff all the way at the top so it’s out of my eye line and I’m not constantly looking at it. Cleaning was also a great way for me to go through and ditch things I no longer eat or stuff I know I shouldn’t be eating! A great way to start off a healthy, clean diet is to do a complete overhaul of your kitchen. It sends signals to your brain that a big change is going on and opens it up for a fresh beginning! If you take action, toss those unhealthy leftovers, naughty things lurking in your freezer or fridge and organize your cabinets in a smart creative way, maybe even add some fun motivational quotes in there, you are setting yourself up for success! And now every time you walk into your kitchen you’ll be reminded of it!! Go get cleaning and send me your before and afters! I can’t wait to see!

COMFORT JUICE?

organice ave

March has gotten off to a manic start for me, not that I can complain, I am much happier when I have a lot on my plate but that doesn’t always help me from feeling overwhelmed and even anxious at times. I’m sure you can relate! Sometimes you just get into that rut where there are never enough hours in the day, your head is spinning and your to-do list gives you an anxiety attack, hey, we’re human. As a New Yorker, sometimes I feel like this is a much more common state of being than in other parts of the country but that’s a whole other story! Anyways, in times of high stress and anxiety we tend to reach for comfort food. Had a bad day? You deserve a cupcake! This week been really rough at work? Let’s just stay in and order pizza. Now I’m not saying you don’t deserve a cupcake because I love cupcakes! I am saying that when your looking for something to calm your mind and balance your stressed out body, our go-to “comfort foods” do the exact opposite! Shoveling some unrefined cards down your throat is sure to give you a little pep in your step for an hour (if your lucky) but then ultimately leave you more ravenous then before and feeling empty. Same thing goes for that pizza.

So when I’m having an awful day, what do I reach for? GREEN JUICE! I know, you probably want to punch me, right? Well just hear me out. Imagine how you feel when your stressed and anxious, now think about the effect those feelings have on your body, your organs, right down to the cells. I’ll give you a hint, you’re also putting all that stress on to them! What did they ever do to you? When I reach for a green juice or whatever fresh vegetable juice I fancy that day, it reminds me that I love my body! I am so lucky to have this wonderful body that can withstand so much stress, that gets me through each day and that I am still in control of what I put in to it. To me, drinking some fresh green juice feels like a nice warm blanket all over my body. I’m getting lots of nutrients and it’s helping my body return to balance! I don’t crash in an hour and I don’t wake up the next morning next to a pizza box and feel awful about myself. But hey, if you drink your green juice, relax, center yourself and couple hours later (with a more level head) you want a cupcake or a slice of pizza, go for it! Just don’t forget to have your comfort juice!

REVAMP YOUR PEANUT BUTTER

applesnpb                 It comes as a shock to most people when I reveal that I was never a big peanut butter fan. I get this confused and disappointed look on peoples’ faces when I reveal this not-so- secret little factoid. “But why?” “What don’t you like?” “I love peanut butter!” I know, I get it and I’m not trying to insult your favorite nut butter but it just never struck my fancy.  I was just never really into nuts growing up and combine that with all the mixed media messages as to whether or not nuts were healthy or fatty, I just figured it was easier that way. Now as a vegetarian/vegan it’s important to look for other sources of protein to keep you powering through your day so I decided to really try to get into nut butter. My first attempt was almond butter since I enjoy eating almonds a lot more than eating peanuts , I thought this would be a likely winner and I was correct. I quite enjoy almond butter and apples! Victory! However, one faithful day I was at an event and as part of our take home gift bag there was a jar of Peanut Butter and Co’s Cinnamon Raisin Peanut Butter. Well I certainly didn’t want to waste a whole jar of peanut butter so I decided it sounded yummy enough to give it a whirl and boy am I glad I did. I had never thought peanut butter could taste so good! I can practically eat this with a spoon like ice cream – it’s dangerous! The really cool thing about it is that I even compared calories to normal peanut butters and it’s barely anything more. So much deliciousness with out added fat and calories – yippee!

For those of you who don’t live in New York City where Peanut Butter and Co’s headquarters are located or have a supply at your local supermarket, don’t fear! This can be really simple and fun to do at home! I bet if you have kids or babysit kids they would absolutely love revamping their peanut butter too! Simply go to whole foods or your local health good store and get all natural peanut butter, the kind you watch get made as you hold down the lever. Now pick up some of your favorite dried fruit or goodies and mix them in when you get home! Raisins and cinnamon are super easy and guaranteed to rock your world but if your doing this with kids they might have fun adding sprinkles or M&Ms to their mix. Another favorite of mine is chopped dried cherries and mini dark chocolate morsels, for a truly decadent peanut butter! Get creative and let me know what other fun peanut butter revamps you make!

A WEEK OF DETOXING

I’ve spent the last five days on a detox plan and I am not proud to say that it was a lot more challenging than I had thought. I typically tend to do juice detox so this was my first official ‘eating clean’ detox. Essentially all I could have was 4 cups of green tea, herbal tea, fruits & veggies, quinoa, black beans, lentils and almonds. Oh and I could have some oats in the morning! Not bad, right? It doesn’t seem hard because you still get to eat and your not just surviving on juices but it still has eliminated all processed foods and sugars (other than natural fruit sugars).

Would I advise you to try this detox diet plan ?
Sure, the detox is nutrient loaded and can help you get creative with fruits and veggies. You’ll end up discovering you have a taste for way more healthy meals than you ever thought. You’ll also ween yourself off sugar and coffee, which is HUGE progress! I’m finished with the detox but I’m still maintaining awareness of not consuming a lot of sugar or processed foods.

Did you lose a lot of weight?
Well, I lost a few pounds but keep in mind I generally eat pretty healthy and didn’t have much to lose. If you continued to consume the detox foods past the 5 days and adapted it as more of a vegan or clean eating lifestyle you would certainly see weight loss and if you normally eat pretty crappy, you are absolutely guaranteed to drop some pounds.

Were you hungry or tired all the time on the detox?
I was a little tired at first because I was extremely coffee dependent but after the first day or so that subsided and I was fine. I did notice myself sleeping “harder” at night, if you know what I mean. I would literally pass out and not budge till my alarm rang in the morning. Hungry I wasn’t but I was craving things ALL THE TIME! The oats and quinoa fill you up but your left feeling kind of empty, itching for something more. I had cravings for anything from salmon to red velvet brownies, which got torturous.

On the whole, the detox diet felt great to do something nice for my body. Detoxing definitely reminded me how important it is to be aware of what we’re putting in our bodies and how good we can feel when we put high quality vitamins and nutrients into us. It’s definitely not easy to eat super healthy and not eat processed foods all the time but with a little extra time and preparing meals and planning out what your going to eat each day you can make your life more conducive to it. Clean eating is ALWAYS the way to go and I would highly recommend doing this detox diet to anyone who wants to refresh their system, gain energy and kick start some healthy eating habits!

Gummy Bear Green Tea

liptongreentea

Now, I don’t usually do specific product recommendations and I promise you Lipton is not paying me for this lovely promotion but after being sick for the past couple days and going through boxes of different green teas, I really felt I had to give this one a shout out. I’m tea addict, I could go on and on about the different loose leave teas I keep in the house but I love that I picked up this Lipton’s Green Tea with acai, dragon fruit and melon in duane reade along with my other ‘get well’ supplies because that means you can too! This tea tastes so delicious that I feel like I’m drinking a gummy bear! It’s so light and fruity that it was easy to drink cup after cup of it.

So I just had to share it with all you amateur tea drinkers trying to get your four cups a day in, Lipton’s Green Tea with super fruits can be a great way to help ween yourself on to the green stuff! Drinking green tea everyday is so much healthier for you than coffee and with yummy green tea as accessible as your local duane reade or super market there are no excuses to not start incorporating it into your diet today!

HOW TO BE SOCIAL AND SKINNY

Here’s my first ever “comment back” tip clip about how to be skinny and social! I get some many questions from lovely sweet and skinny-ers like yourself that I decided to make some response youtube videos to some of the most frequently asked questions. Living in a big city like NYC, temptation is everywhere and a lot of jobs require you to super social and attend tons of events so here’s how to keep up appearances and still not sabotage all that good work you put in eating healthy all day and sweating at the gym! Enjoy!

Good Morning Sunshine

alarm clock
A couple weeks ago I read that a study in the UK reported that people who rise earlier, talking about 7am early, tend to be slimmer, happier and more conscientious than their later waking peers. Now for those of you who work a 9 to 5 and get your bum out of bed even earlier than 7 am, please try not to laugh at me for finding this revolutionary but I live a relatively alternative lifestyle and therefore kind of make my own waking hours. However, since reading this fact, as well as a couple other articles about women who really inspire me and seeing just how long their day is and how much they manage to fit in to their waking hours, I decided to start waking up earlier.

I’ve been making it a habit to wake up between 7 and 8am in the morning everyday and then giving myself till 9 or 9:30am on the weekends. I found that since my body has adjusted to waking up so early during the week, I don’t tend to want to sleep as late as I used to on the weekends and I absolutely love it. I am addicted to waking up earlier now! I don’t know if I’ve lost any weight cause I haven’t been paying particular attention to that but I definitely feel more accomplished in my day and get a lot more done which makes for a much happier me! I also have gotten in to some really amazing habits like going to the gym or doing some stretching yoga every morning and then having some tea, going over my goals for the year, month, week and seeing what I can tackle that day but also spend a few minutes feeling grateful for all the wonderful things I have going on in my life right now. It’s a world away from my usual grab some coffee and get myself ready to run out the door as fast as possible before my first appointment days of the past. Getting up earlier has definitely made me feel more balanced, happy and productive and I can’t imagine ever going back now. I’m enjoying the results so much that now when I have to be to set really early (like 6am/7am) I don’t even mind getting up a little earlier than necessary so I can go through my usual routine!

Skinny Book Club: 8 HOUR Diet

8-hour-diet-book
It’s been a while since my last Skinny Chick Book Club post but I felt compelled to tell you about my latest read! After flipping through the pages of Women’s Health magazine at the gym, I was completely intrigued with this new 8 hour diet concept (aka intermittent fasting) and just had to buy the full book on amazon ASAP! I’m down about 5-7lbs since I started but let me say I do not have much weight to lose and I could easily see this helping people lose even more weight relatively effortlessly.

In a nutshell, we eat too many hours of the day and therefore not giving our body enough time to burn our energy stores or do some much needed cellular repairs. So by eating for only 8 hours of the day, at least 3-5 times a week, we can help our body return to its optimal health and fat burning potential. The benefits are too many to lost but its safe to say it extends way beyond mere weight loss. Think helping new skin cells regenerate, slowing cancer cell growth and protecting your brain against neurodegenerative disorders!

I simply had to give it a whirl! I will warn you, if your a breakfast lover like myself it is not easy to give that up but after a few days I got used to having my morning cup of tea and waiting till noon to break my fast. I also definitely felt it on the opposite end, after my eight hours were up a few nights I was pretty hungry and very regretful of not eating more for dinner. However, compared to most “diets” it’s relatively painless and effective, you never feel like a food is “off limits”, which is great. Definitely give this book a read! It has tons of scientific evidence to back up its theories and loads of additional nutritional information about different foods that you should be squeezing into your eight hours to get optimal performance out of your body! An overall a Go Sweet and Skinny gold star!

SKINNY EGGPLANT PARM

eggplantEggplant parmigiana is one of my favorite earthly delights. It’s such a rich, decadent vegetarian comfort food so naturally I was craving some this past week when temperatures in NY made it feel more like Alaska. Still, I had to find a way to make it  skinny style with out losing any of it’s amazingness.

SKINNY EGGPLANT PARMIGIANA

2 mini eggplants or 1 lg if you prefer

1 cup of panko bread crumbs

1/2 cup of olive oil

3 tbsps of minced garlic

1 bag of low fat shredded mozzarella or veggie mozzarella (vegan substitute)

1 jar of low sodium, natural, organic tomato sauce (or if you make your own – even better!)

eggplant2

Preheat your oven to 375, get out a bake sheet or two and your pyrex and lay out two lines of paper towels on your table. Slice your eggplant as thinly as possibly without it falling apart (or you hurting yourself) and lay it out on your paper towel. Place another paper towel over your finished slices and let the paper towels absorb the excess moisture of the eggplant, you’ll notice there’s a lot! Now I personally  LOVE garlic and olive oil, but if you don’t and your not vegan, you can replace this with an egg like you would when normally breading stuff. So in one bowl I put my panko bread crumbs (which are lighter, fluffier and better for you than normal bread crumbs) and in a second bowl I mix my olive oil and minced garlic. I lightly dip the eggplant slice in the oil mix and then the breadcrumbs and then place on a bake sheet. If your doing this with the oil instead of the egg, do not worry, all the breadcrumbs do NOT stick, it’s not you and it’s fine! Place them all on your sheet and stick it in the oven for a couple minutes to soften the eggplant.

While that’s in the oven, spread your sauce on the bottom of the pyrex dish (or whatever dish your using). Once your eggplant’s been in the oven for 5 minutes you can take it out and make a layer on top of the sauce. Now sprinkle some shredded mozzarella, layer with eggplant, sauce then mozzarella and onwards till you run out of dish or eggplant! I like to top it off with sauce, a sprinkle of whatever breadcrumbs might be left from dipping and a sprinkle of cheese. I know it can seem like a bit of an undertaking but trust me it’s delicious and so much better for you than classic eggplant parmigiana – you’ll never want to go back! Plus if you live alone like me, it’ll feed you for a week!

Monday MoJo

mm4              Albert Einstein has some of the most amazing quotes on life, he clearly had a lot more figured out than his contemporaries may have given him credit for. This particular quote, I selected to start of our week because I feel like it’s applicable to the mind and the body! Interpret as you may for it’s YOUR monday motivation but I’ll let you in on what I’m taking away from it. In life, what makes us happier than almost anything else is forward motion. Think about it. Progress, progress, progress. Think of an area of your life your really happy about right now and I guarantee it’s because your seeing progress in that area. This is why people can have tons of money and love and still be unhappy, what they really need is growth and progress, the feeling like they’re moving forward. What areas of your life can you make progress on? Is it your health or your diet? Because your already making progress by checking out this website and showing that you care about your life and your body! Set small goals to show yourself progress, how about making it to the gym 4 times this week instead of 2 or 3? That’s progress! Little by little you can accomplish big things! Of course, you can apply it more literally as well, moving helps keep our body balanced! It clears our and head and reduces stress when we exercise, that’s why when you skip the gym for a week you’ll tend to feel a bit of kilter and maybe not understand why. Our bodies love movement whether it’s walking to run your errands, cleaning our house or jumping on an elliptical. Movement keeps us balanced and happy. So happy monday my sweet and skinny loves, get motivated and get moving!!

MSG: AN ENEMY AMONG US

monosodium-glutamate-side-effects-300x225                    Now I’m sure your no stranger to the word MSG but if your anything like me, you may have just assumed it was some seasoning used in a specific type of chinese food that you wouldn’t even eat in the first place. To be completely honest, I knew it was bad for me but didn’t even think I’d come across it in my daily diet (since I eat pretty healthfully) till I watched the documentary “Hungry for Change” and was enlightened to this real enemy amongst our food supply!

First, let’s talk about the picture above! MSG is actually used in labs to make laboratory mice OBESE!!! That’s right when they need to test out a new weight loss drug or strategy and need to start off with a plump mouse, scientists inject MSG into these poor creatures and they just about double in size! Can you believe this is in our food supply!!?!? I know, please, go ahead, get as angry as I am. This is RIDICULOUS!! There is a very basic but wonderfully enlightening website called msgtruth.org that you can check out to find in detail information about all the different studies that have been done as well as a comprehensive list of foods you should avoid. In general, it’s found primarily in places you (being a sweet and skinny peep) already know to stay away from like McDonalds (chicken, beef AND in the fries’ seasoning!), Burger King (chicken, sausage, even their new veggie burger) and KFC (pretty much everything on the menu). Some less obvious places include canned soups (progresso, you disappoint me), parmesan cheese, ranch dressing, dorito’s, cheetos and even deli meats! Once again, another great reason to eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and whole grains! Anything that isn’t natural, REAL food is just that, not real food. So do your body a favor and only put the good stuff in! I promise you it will pay you back for the rest of your life. :)
