Fearless Feb: SOULCYCLE

soul-cycle

Can you believe I was scared to go to SOULCYCLE!? Well, not scared like something terrible was going to happen if I went but I felt a little intimidated and didn’t want to make a fool of myself. Literally, everyone and their mother had told me to go, that I would love it but I had ‘group fitness anxiety’. I’m a yogi and dancer by nature, I specialize is being uber flexible and memorizing routines. Pilates? I’m there, Hip hop? Count me in, Spinning?! Eh, no thank you! And while I do encourage you guys to find an activity you LOVE that you enjoy doing and stick to that to start getting you moving, sometimes it’s fun and exhilarating to step outside your  comfort zone and dive into the latest fitness craze. In honor of #FearlessFebruary, I did just that! I grabbed a girlfriend and went to SOULCYCLE and….

IT WAS FUN!!!

Seriously, I had the best time and would probably do it every day if it wasn’t so pricey! The music was great, the basic moves spoke to the dancer in me and made me feel at home. However, the best experience was when the lights were dim, the music was loud, our instructor told us to close are eyes and just give over to the music. It was a very different type of meditation than usual for me and I totally loved it. I felt sweaty but invigorated and alive afterward. Big thanks to my girl Alyssa for accompanying me and my client Lauren for telling me how obsessed she was and pushing me to go! You ladies rock and now you’ve got me addicted! :)

So what exactly is #FearlessFebruary?

February is one of my favorite months! It’s my birthday (on the 24th) and Valentine’s Day – a double whamie of love and fun! I’ve also had an incredible start to 2014 and I’m ready to break some boundaries, bust through some blocks and start 27 fearless and fabulous! So this month I am pushing myself out of my comfort zone everyday! I have made a promise to myself (and my streaks app haha) to do something that scares me EVERY DAY this month. I’ll be sharing ones like this SOULCYCLE post, which I feel will particularly connect with you guys but feel free to tweet at me @cassandrabodzak and ask me what my #fearlessfebruary act was that day – I’d love to share! They have ranged so far from anything like putting myself out of my comfort zone physically by trying harder classes, to attending events solo and introducing myself to new people (always a scary task!) to contacting people who inspire and intimidate me. I’m SUPER EXCITED to share with you tomorrow my #FearlessFebruary Instagram Contest - be sure to follow me and look out for the announcement tomorrow morning!

#40DaysofFitness

20130822-225321.jpg

Are you ready to get fit!? Want to develop an AMAZING habit of getting your body moving EVERY DAY?! Well, I did and that is why I decided to embark on my #40DaysofFitness challenge! For the next 40 days I am pledging to get some sort of exercise for at least 30 mins a day, if not more. Why? Well it’s so easy to get busy and forget how important physical fitness is to both our mind and our body! I know I’m totally guilty of it, I love my yoga but when I have a ton of things going on sometimes it slips to the bottom of the list. When we’re busy and stressed is actually when we need to get moving the most! Why 40 days? Well it takes about 40 days to really make something a habit, a ritual, something you just do. And don’t we all want being active for at least 30 mins a day something that we just do? Join me! Comment below to make your pledge and start tweeting + instagraming your #40daysofFitness! Follow me at @gosweetandskinny on insta and @gosweetnskinny on twitter – hashtag away and let’s do this together!

Can I Exercise on a Juice Cleanse?

In honor of my ebook #Juicespiration launching on Amazon.com, I’ve put together a whole series of Juicespiration videos! The third video is here to answer another one of my most frequently asked questions!! CAN I EXERCISE ON A JUICE CLEANSE?! Well you’ll have to watch the video to see my answer! ;)

20 minute YOGA break!

I don’t know about you but my schedule doesn’t always permit me the luxury of hitting up a yoga class on the daily. I’ve gotten much better at making it a priority but sometimes I just need a little yoga fix to get me moving, kick up my energy and open me up! I stumbled up this AMAZING 20 minute yoga video on YouTube from PlumTV and wanted to share it with you guys. It’s a lot of heart openers aka back bends so it really gives you a nice loving feeling throughout and provides you with a sustainable energy boost to take on the rest of your day! Give it a whirl and enjoy! Namaste.

Yoga: Now with INTENTION!

20120511-103956.jpg
I have been a self proclaimed yoga-junkie since before Lululemon started making amaze balls yoga pants. I can find myself relatively comfortable in almost any class my little heart desires to step into, and I say this not to brag but to really emphasize my point here. As many of you may have noticed from following the website and YouTube videos, I have just recently gotten really into meditating. Meditating was something that I flirted with for years! I tried it off and on in college and always sat and focused on my breath at the end of yoga class but never really incorporated it into my yoga practice. I know, this might seem insane, could I really have done yoga all these years and NOT figured it out till now!? Well I’m totally calling myself out on this one in hopes that it will help you take your practice to the next level or maybe even give yoga a second try if it wasn’t your thing at first. A couple nights a go I went to the “power yoga” class at my gym, I was juicing during the day and in a very meditative mood as it was but then the instructor took a minute and spoke to us about setting an intention for our practice. For those of you that have been to yoga class, this is fairly common. However, for the first time, I really set a powerful intention for my practice. In fact, it had nothing to do with my body and wasn’t directly related to the yoga work I was doing but to the meditative work I was doing at home. I instantly felt more calm and centered in my practice, my intention gave me strength and balance. In some of the more challenging poses I really felt like I was harnessing power towards my intention. Yoga went from an amazing work out where I stretch my already uber flexible body and feel like jello when I leave to this other worldly experience, I don’t think I’ve ever been so relaxed and grounded while sweating so much! I felt empowered and balanced afterwards like I had gotten a mind massage, if you can imagine that. So I HAD to share with you guys! I will never go back to doing intention-less yoga again and I strongly encourage you all to challenge yourself this week by taking a yoga class and setting a powerful intention and just letting that experience guide you! Let me know how it goes! Comment below after class!

Just Go! (to the gym)

20130518-104640.jpg

A friend of mine hashtagged a photo at the gym yesterday morning “#yougotcaughtsleeping” and I absolutely loved it! It truly is about going the extra mile and honoring that commitment you are making to yourself to have a healthier body! Now, I am the first person to admit it’s not always easy but it’s ALWAYS worth it! Have you ever felt like you wish you had skipped the gym after a good workout? My guess is probably not. It’s all about showing up, not every session needs to be crazy intense but if you do yourself the favor of getting into the space regularly, you have won half the battle. You create a routine and you can build upon it and expand. Sometimes the last thing I feel like doing when I wake up is getting dressed and hitting the gym but when those less than ambitious days come and I drag myself there anyway I always reward myself with something small. It can be as simple as a sauna session afterwards or buying a new magazine to read on the elliptical but it gives me something to look forward to while I’m lacing up my sneakers. I’ve also found that having a gym buddy can really help motivate you to get to the gym more often. Sometimes my girlfriend and I will spend an hour gabbing away on side by side treadmills and totally forget we’re at the gym! Plus, it definitely helps you get out of bed when you know you have someone waiting for you at the gym.

So there’s some Monday motivation for you! Make a pledge to get to the gym everyday this work week and be a little unreasonable in what your commiting to do for your body!!

SHOE TALK with LeanGirlsClub

shoes
First, I’d like to thank Cassandra for letting me guest blog today. I love reading Go Sweet and Skinny and can’t wait to try her recipes. Being a working woman, I find myself making the same ol’ things and often get bored. It’s important to try new recipes so I don’t resort to junk food!

Are you a shoe lover? I love me a good pair of shoes. Stilettos, platforms, wedges, sandals, and boots. Usually I select shoes based on the aesthetic: the color, the height of the heel, embellishments, what outfits it can accompany….

That’s not the approach we should have with running shoes. All shoes were not created equal. Did you know that most running injuries are from ill-fitting shoes? Like bras, we need to be fitted for a good running shoe. Your local running store, not athletic store, will do that for you for free. A representative will watch you run on the treadmill and analyze your gait. Depending on the results and your fitness level, s/he will recommend a stability shoe or a neutral shoe. They’ll come to you with several options and help you find the best shoe. Sorry, you won’t get to choose your shoe based on your favorite colors…the shoe will pick you. How will you know? You just will. It’ll feel heavenly and feel like they were molded for your feet. The shoe will make you run stronger, faster, and lighter. A good shoe will get your butt off the coach and moving.

And if your running store is a GOOD running store, they’ll have a great return policy and let you return the shoes if it doesn’t fit right…even if you’ve run in them. I personally love Jack Rabbits, Paragon, and The New York Running Company at The Time Warner Center.

SWEET LITTLE SIGNS

My lovely friend J, totally inspired this post by instagraming the above photo! Leaving cute little notes for yourself around the house is a fantastic way to keep yourself on track and motivated to follow your resolutions and fitness goals. Anybody that has seen my desk knows that I’m a quote-a-holic, I’ve got brightly colored sticky notes with inspirational sayings everywhere! They’re there for those morning when I’m blankly staring into the abyss while I drink my coffee and need something to kick myself in to gear. Sometimes it takes just one and other times I’ll end up reading my entire wall before getting back to work but either way they serve their purpose as little traffic signs whenever I may veer off the right path.

J’s signs are strategically placed and perfectly fun and positive so that when she’s reaching for that bin of goodies she knows exactly what her bigger goals are. This is a great way to help make your new year’s resolutions stick! Leave a note by where you put your sneakers reminding you why it’s so important to work out or put a note on the cabinet of something you tend to over eat reminding you why it’s so important to you to lose weight or eat healthier. Customize these notes to yourself so that they really trigger you deep down, we all know exercising or eating healthy is good for you but what is in it for you? Maybe you exercise so that you can proudly wear your favorite bikini in the summer or maybe you do it to keep up with your two year old after a long day at work, it doesn’t matter the reason just so long as it’s yours! At the end of the day our actions are a clear reflection of our reasons and our priorities so why not put them on display to make sure you really make it happen this time!

I’d love to see some of your own little notes!

Happy Holidays!

20121224-125611.jpg

Happy Holidays my sweet and skinny loves!! I hope your all done with your baking and cooking and have sometime to sit back and relax with your family for the next few days! This year I made nutella xmas trees, red velvet wreaths(pictured above) and vegan snickerdoodles! Since cookies are certainly on the naughty list I made them bite size so everybody can taste each different one with out busting their cookie calorie budget. I also made some pretty incredible wicked hot chocolate cupcakes which you can look forward to being posted about next week and some vegan strawberry shortcake cupcakes who’s recipe I’ll also divulge soon!

Alright, enough taunting you about yummy baked goods– here are some sweet and skinny tips for tonight and tomorrow! Enjoy!

Staying Slim during Santa Season:

Come prepared. I know it’s hard to remember to eat breakfast with all the excitement of the holidays and all the things on your to do list but a good healthy breakfast will be your best friend later in the day! Don’t arrive at a party ravenous or you’ll eat whatever they have out, when your not too hungry you have the advantage of being picky about what goes in your mouth!

Bring your own. This is my go to. When in doubt bring a delicious appetizer and/or dessert that’s healthy or low in fat. This way everyone wins, you look like a super sweet guest and you know for sure there will be something you really like that’s also healthy for you at the party!

Think like a bird. That’s right, take tiny portions of everything and only go back for seconds on things you absolutely love. You get to sample all the goodies and not over eat. An even better ideas is to allow yourself twenty minutes before you go back for seconds. This way you’ll know of your truly hungry enough for another!

Hope this helps! Drink lots of water and focus on catching up with your loved ones, not the buffet and you’ll sail through the holidays sweet and skinny style!

Choosing the Right Gym

Picking the right gym for you is about as crucial to your physical fitness as picking the right partner is for your relationship! I would say that no one gym is neccesarily better than the next, they’re all just different and it really depends on your taste. Now, as you can guess, this article was inspired because I just joined a new gym! After moving a couple months ago, my old gym was no longer convenient and I needed to find something more local. There are about four gyms within walking distance of my apartment with quite a range in style and atmosphere. After visiting them all it became clear what was important to me in a gym and what gym I would REALLY want to go to day after day – and that’s the key to finding a place that helps you work out! Here are the ABC’s I would strongly advise you to consider when choosing the perfect gym to start shedding that holiday weight at..

ATMOSPHERE
Do you feel like your in someone’s basement? A mannequin on display at a store in a window front space? Now don’t misunderstand me, I don’t mean these negatively, if you like the rough and gruff appeal of a basement like gym with the barebones of decorations and tons of machines and weights because it makes you feel like your ready to pump some iron and work hard – then that’s the right gym for you! If you get so bored at cardio but absolutely love people watching, maybe a gym with a huge window front that you can stare at while working it on the elliptical is for you. If your like me, you’ll tend to go for the spa like gym with a sauna and jacuzzi because it makes you feel like your treating yourself to a workout each day. The key is just to recognize which one is going to get you into YOUR workout happy place!

BUDDIES
Nothing beats having a friend to meet at the gym, I promise nothing will make you look forward to it more. My friend Katelyn and I have been taking full advantage of belonging to the same gym, exploring classes together and gossiping on the treadmill before rewarding ourselves with a nice sauna or steam session. It doesn’t even feel like work if you have someone to join you and you’ll never miss a gym date when someones counting on you to be there! If you don’t know anyone in your neighborhood, it might also be a good idea to take some group classes and try to make a gym buddy out of someone you frequently see in your favorite classes.

CLASSES
Classes are SO important if your a group exercise person or just stuck in a rut. I’m not a huge fan of spinning but I absolutely love the spinning class at my gym because I know I will get a work out I wouldn’t get by myself. If your a yoga girl, you may want to ask around the gym about the different yoga instructors and who teaches the best class. NYC gyms are expensive enough as it is, you don’t want to join one and then have to go take your Zumba class somewhere else, so make sure you pick one with classes you could really see yourself going to!

MONDAY MORNING MOTIVATION

Motivational quotes are probably one of my favorite things in the world. I’m a total quote-a-holic, I have pages of them in my documents, they’re tacked all over my cork board and scribbled on my dry erase board. So I thought I’d share my little personal “fire starter” with you. Every monday morning I’m going to share another motivational quote to start your week off on the right foot! I hope it get’s you thinking and sets your mind in the right direction for having the best week yet.

This first one is particularly close to my heart, it’s been with me since high school and it’s probably the closet thing to my life motto. “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” You are a blank slate and the beauty of that is that you can create whatever you’d like. We live in a world where people are inventing jobs that would have never been thought possible just a decade ago. We’re breaking barriers and reinventing ourselves and you can do this right now in your life. It can be as big as deciding you want to start your own business or as small as deciding you want to be a person who regularly goes to the gym. You decide what defines you, what kind of person you want to be. So what do YOU want to create this week?

Skinnygirl YOGA dvd

I hope you guys all read my “Morning Mojo” post, it was super quick and if I do say so myself, motivational. In keeping with the theme of that I figured I would share one of my favorite morning go-to DVDs, “Bethenny’s Skinnygirl Workout”. I love workout DVDs in general just because they’re so convenient, great for taking when traveling and perfect for that spur of the moment sweat (or stretch) session at home! This one is particularly close to my heart because it’s Bethenny! So for me it’s a two for one special, it’s a pretty intense yoga practice while getting to watch a woman who I personally find truly inspirational. She’s done leap and bounds to help make eating healthy and staying skinny accessible to woman everywhere and seeing her face during my morning work out reminds me of all that we are capable of and all that I strive to accomplish. Not a bad way to start the day,eh?

Anyways, more on the DVD, it’s divided into three 15 minute segments where you can pause it if you don’t have time for a full on 45 minute work out but it also flows nicely if you don’t pause, which is really quite wonderful. It’s ideal for someone who’s done a bunch of yoga before and is trying to incorporate a morning workout into their lives. You can start just doing the first 15 minutes for a week or two and gradually work your way up to doing the entire workout through. I usually prefer a more spiritual, meditative yoga class but I think this is a really great wake up routine to get those juices going so I’ll save the meditative stuff for later at night. ;)

Morning MoJo

I heard a very interesting story the other day about a woman who wanted to start exercising in the morning before work but was having a real hard time putting it into action. That was until someone told her to start taking small steps. “Wake up and put on your gym clothes and have coffee.” they suggested. Sounds a bit silly, eh? Well after a week of waking up, putting on her gym clothes and having coffee she started doing 10 mins of light stretching, the next week 15 mins of yoga and so on till she had a full on morning work out routine! Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither are great rituals!

I hope this inspires you to wake up just a little bit earlier and rally yourself to take those baby steps to a rewarding commitment.  I know for me getting my body going in the morning starts my whole day off on the right foot! I tend to switch it up, depending on the day I’ll either do 30 mins on the elliptical and some free weights or a yoga dvd. Even on those days you hit snooze a little bit longer than you planned, there are some great 15 minute stretches and morning yoga sessions on youtube right at your fingertip! Here’s one below from yoga today that I did the other morning to get the juices flowing when I didn’t have the time for a full on workout.  I’ll keep posting different ones as I stumble upon them because it’s a great way to spice up your morning and turn a potential breakdown into a breakthrough. You have no idea how amazing you’ll feel even doing ten minutes of yoga on a morning you normally would have just hoped in the shower and made an excuse. When you move in the morning it sets a great tone for the rest of the day to be happier, healthier and a more take charge you! Try it for a week and I promise you’ll start looking forward to it. :)

Yogic Sanity

20120511-103956.jpg

I don’t usually write terribly blog like personal articles without a recipe or something to review but today I was compelled to share my ‘yogic sanity’ with you. As you may have read, my new late night addiction has been candle light yoga and it has made all the difference! Now not only do I look forward to my evening sessions to unwind and center myself but I’ve also been craving yoga in the AM and doing a more intense yoga flow to start my days!
However, what I really wanted to share with you is the effects it’s had on my mental state. In my usually chaotic overbooked life, I often find myself easily stressed and overwhelmed but lately it feels as if someone has hit the slow motion button on my days. I am calmer, more centered and have a better perspective on life’s little mishaps. I find myself getting more done because I spend less time worrying about it. It’s been a wonderful revelation and I’m excited to keep up with it and see what other long term benefits will come. So that’s my advertisement for daily yoga, have you experienced related effects of daily exercise? Email me at gosweetandskinny@gmail.com, I’d love to hear your story!

Crazy for Candlelight!

Get ready to fall inlove/become addicted to Crunch’s Candlelight Yoga DVD! I stumbled upon this beauty while searching netflix for new work out videos to try and stashed it away in my instant queue till the perfect night arrived for some bed time yoga. Now, maybe I’m a dork but I totally lit candles in my apartment when I was doing this DVD and I finished feeling so relaxed and stretched. I was in that perfectly sleepy happy state where you glide to bed on a cloud. Trust me, if you’ve had a rough day or are just wound up about a problem at work or with a boyfriend, this yoga will bring you back to zen faster than a pint of ben and jerry’s can (and you’ll never feel guilty afterwards).  So it’s safe to say I am now ADDICTED to doing this every night before slipping into bed with a book. Sometimes, we need to give our bodies what they need and in New York City I bet a lot of them are craving a little Candlelight yoga!
