Wanderlust Recap + Breakthrough

I had the amazing experience of going to Wanderlust in Squaw Valley (Tahoe, CA) this past weekend and I can’t wait to share with you my favorite classes and my biggest breakthrough in this recap video! Be sure to subscribe to watch all the individual videos of my favorite classes as well as exclusive interviews from the weekend!

I am still so blissed out from all the wonderful yoga classes I was able to take over the weekend, still feeling great and so inspired to up my yoga practice even more. I’m so grateful to Tumeric ALIVE for collaborating with me to go out there and cover some of the fantastic classes they sponsored over the weekend but I do want to let you know that my opinion of their amazing tumeric elixir is truly MY OWN and was not influenced. This video was NOT paid for by Tumeric ALIVE, I’m just genuinely dorking out on how much I love the stuff! ;)

If you’re interested in finding out more about Tumeric, feel free to visit their website here.

What does SkinnybyTara eat?!

In honor of my recent trip to Miami for South Beach Wine and Food Festival – which was a blast (and you’ll totally be seeing a post about that this week!) – I wanted to post the second half to my interview with my friend, fellow healthy living guru and Miami native, Miss Tara Milhem of SkinnyByTara.com. You guys have a pretty good idea of what I eat on a daily basis but here is some insight from my girl Tara! Feel free to comment below on the video and ask her questions – I’m sure she will be more than happy to answer them!

My interview with Jordan Younger of TheBlondeVegan.com

It was so much fun to meet up with Jordan Younger, vegan smoothie queen and creator of TheBlondeVegan.com. She is such a vibrant and inspirational lady and I’m very pleased to share with you part 1 of our interview! Check her out! :)

MOST RELAXING YOGA EVER

I kid you not when I say this yoga video will literally make you feel like you just had a massage and sleep like a baby! I know you all know how much I love trying out various youtube yoga videos from time to time and that’s exactly how I stumbled upon this gem. Now, I will be honest, it’s not much of a work out, it’s definitely more stretching. So, I wasn’t necessarily looking for it but I wanted a yoga routine that wouldn’t keep me from falling asleep afterwards because it was pretty late at night but I had to get SOMETHING in!  Light a candle, burn so incense and let this video just loosen up every muscle in your body. I’ve had a really crazy week of recipe testing and prepping for my upcoming trip to the west coast and I truly believe stumbling upon this gem on youtube was the universes’s way of giving me a little “self-care” present! So bookmark this page and keep it for that week when you’re dying for a spa treatment or massage and just don’t have the time or money. You will thank me! ;)

20 minute YOGA break!

I don’t know about you but my schedule doesn’t always permit me the luxury of hitting up a yoga class on the daily. I’ve gotten much better at making it a priority but sometimes I just need a little yoga fix to get me moving, kick up my energy and open me up! I stumbled up this AMAZING 20 minute yoga video on YouTube from PlumTV and wanted to share it with you guys. It’s a lot of heart openers aka back bends so it really gives you a nice loving feeling throughout and provides you with a sustainable energy boost to take on the rest of your day! Give it a whirl and enjoy! Namaste.

Yoga: Now with INTENTION!

20120511-103956.jpg
I have been a self proclaimed yoga-junkie since before Lululemon started making amaze balls yoga pants. I can find myself relatively comfortable in almost any class my little heart desires to step into, and I say this not to brag but to really emphasize my point here. As many of you may have noticed from following the website and YouTube videos, I have just recently gotten really into meditating. Meditating was something that I flirted with for years! I tried it off and on in college and always sat and focused on my breath at the end of yoga class but never really incorporated it into my yoga practice. I know, this might seem insane, could I really have done yoga all these years and NOT figured it out till now!? Well I’m totally calling myself out on this one in hopes that it will help you take your practice to the next level or maybe even give yoga a second try if it wasn’t your thing at first. A couple nights a go I went to the “power yoga” class at my gym, I was juicing during the day and in a very meditative mood as it was but then the instructor took a minute and spoke to us about setting an intention for our practice. For those of you that have been to yoga class, this is fairly common. However, for the first time, I really set a powerful intention for my practice. In fact, it had nothing to do with my body and wasn’t directly related to the yoga work I was doing but to the meditative work I was doing at home. I instantly felt more calm and centered in my practice, my intention gave me strength and balance. In some of the more challenging poses I really felt like I was harnessing power towards my intention. Yoga went from an amazing work out where I stretch my already uber flexible body and feel like jello when I leave to this other worldly experience, I don’t think I’ve ever been so relaxed and grounded while sweating so much! I felt empowered and balanced afterwards like I had gotten a mind massage, if you can imagine that. So I HAD to share with you guys! I will never go back to doing intention-less yoga again and I strongly encourage you all to challenge yourself this week by taking a yoga class and setting a powerful intention and just letting that experience guide you! Let me know how it goes! Comment below after class!

Skinnygirl YOGA dvd

I hope you guys all read my “Morning Mojo” post, it was super quick and if I do say so myself, motivational. In keeping with the theme of that I figured I would share one of my favorite morning go-to DVDs, “Bethenny’s Skinnygirl Workout”. I love workout DVDs in general just because they’re so convenient, great for taking when traveling and perfect for that spur of the moment sweat (or stretch) session at home! This one is particularly close to my heart because it’s Bethenny! So for me it’s a two for one special, it’s a pretty intense yoga practice while getting to watch a woman who I personally find truly inspirational. She’s done leap and bounds to help make eating healthy and staying skinny accessible to woman everywhere and seeing her face during my morning work out reminds me of all that we are capable of and all that I strive to accomplish. Not a bad way to start the day,eh?

Anyways, more on the DVD, it’s divided into three 15 minute segments where you can pause it if you don’t have time for a full on 45 minute work out but it also flows nicely if you don’t pause, which is really quite wonderful. It’s ideal for someone who’s done a bunch of yoga before and is trying to incorporate a morning workout into their lives. You can start just doing the first 15 minutes for a week or two and gradually work your way up to doing the entire workout through. I usually prefer a more spiritual, meditative yoga class but I think this is a really great wake up routine to get those juices going so I’ll save the meditative stuff for later at night. ;)

Yogic Sanity

20120511-103956.jpg

I don’t usually write terribly blog like personal articles without a recipe or something to review but today I was compelled to share my ‘yogic sanity’ with you. As you may have read, my new late night addiction has been candle light yoga and it has made all the difference! Now not only do I look forward to my evening sessions to unwind and center myself but I’ve also been craving yoga in the AM and doing a more intense yoga flow to start my days!
However, what I really wanted to share with you is the effects it’s had on my mental state. In my usually chaotic overbooked life, I often find myself easily stressed and overwhelmed but lately it feels as if someone has hit the slow motion button on my days. I am calmer, more centered and have a better perspective on life’s little mishaps. I find myself getting more done because I spend less time worrying about it. It’s been a wonderful revelation and I’m excited to keep up with it and see what other long term benefits will come. So that’s my advertisement for daily yoga, have you experienced related effects of daily exercise? Email me at gosweetandskinny@gmail.com, I’d love to hear your story!

Crazy for Candlelight!

Get ready to fall inlove/become addicted to Crunch’s Candlelight Yoga DVD! I stumbled upon this beauty while searching netflix for new work out videos to try and stashed it away in my instant queue till the perfect night arrived for some bed time yoga. Now, maybe I’m a dork but I totally lit candles in my apartment when I was doing this DVD and I finished feeling so relaxed and stretched. I was in that perfectly sleepy happy state where you glide to bed on a cloud. Trust me, if you’ve had a rough day or are just wound up about a problem at work or with a boyfriend, this yoga will bring you back to zen faster than a pint of ben and jerry’s can (and you’ll never feel guilty afterwards).  So it’s safe to say I am now ADDICTED to doing this every night before slipping into bed with a book. Sometimes, we need to give our bodies what they need and in New York City I bet a lot of them are craving a little Candlelight yoga!

Summer Shape Up: 10 minute YOGA

It’s that magical time of year again, the weather’s getting warmer, the sun’s shining and it’s only a matter of time till you need to be seen in public in a swimsuit. This year I’m saving myself some money and not buying an over priced NYC gym membership, instead, I’m going to do some work out videos in the comfort of my own apartment. Work out videos are great for those of us with less than ideal schedules – you can do them whenever, for how ever long, no judgement. So I’ll be reviewing a string of different workout videos for you guys over the next couple months as I test them out but here’s my very first!

10 Minute yoga is ah-mazing! Not for the beginner yogi, (they have a beginner version for that though) it has a great pace, flowing from pose to pose while connecting with your breath but without giving you enough time to go over your grocery list while hanging out in downward dog. I love that it’s chopped up into little ten minute segments so that even on mornings that I don’t quite have time to work out, I can do a run through of “yoga basics” and get centered for the rest of the day. My favorite is by far the “yoga burn” segment but they are all short and sweet, making it incredibly easy to switch up your workout daily and not have an excuse to skip it. I’m excited to try out the rest of the videos in this ten minute series because I think it’s an absolutely brilliant way to make work outs accessible to even the most time crunched of us all. Give it a whirl! I bought the DVD, but it’s also available on Netflix instant play!
